The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy, which was published in 2013, has been made into a movie starring Chloe Moretz (who starred in another YA book-to-movie adaptation, If I Stay).
The story is about sixteen-year-old Cassie and her family as the earth is being invaded by aliens (there are, however, no actual encounters with the aliens which adds to the mystery and realism of the story). There are four “waves” of the initial attack which Cassie, her father, and her brother manage to survive. The titular “5th wave”causes the “protectors” of the surviving humans to separate those that are left. They gather all of the young children onto buses, including Cassie’s younger brother, and move everyone else into bunkers. Cassie escapes from this bunker just in time to witness everyone being brutally murdered. Her distrust of the “protectors” is then solidified and Cassie sets out on a mission to find and rescue her younger brother.
I haven’t finished the novel yet, but Rick Yancy does a wonderful job of creating a real sense of fear. Often dystopian novels veer off into the romantic but Yancy keeps the narrative suspenseful and realistic.
