This is a very short novel about the disabled and gypsies that were persecuted and murdered during WWII. Paula Becker is 13 years-old in 1939. She is deaf, living in Germany with her family. When her family learns that disabled people are disappearing, they send her to a shelter with the local priest in an effort to keep her safe. The short novel (can read in 1/2 an hour), describes her condition and how she compensates along with her sadness and fear as she leaves her family. Along the way she meets a strange man, a gypsy, who she ends up falling in love with and marrying once the war ends. A brief, touching glimpse of WWII.
