Surviving Survival: The Art and Science of Resilience by Laurence Gonzales is a fascinating read. It tells the stories of people who have been through traumatic events such as shipwrecks, shark attacks, spousal abuse, and terrible battles in war. The book is about their struggles, triumphs and tragedies after the big event is over. It turns out that suppression and sublimation are actually very good coping mechanisms for moving on from extreme trauma.
Strategies that are not effective include projection, passive aggression, dissociation (denial), acting out, fantasy, and hypochondriasis.
The most important step to recovery is to perceive and believe by recognizing the the reality of the situation and accepting it. Sublimation is used to channel negative feelings into a sport or hobby, or writing or learning a new language or skill.
