A recent post from an ALSC blog touts the importance of offering encouragement and knowledge to parents during storytimes for children. [ALSC is the Association for Library Services to Children]. These are referred to as asides, where you mention the benefits behind a specific activity or song. For example, the song “Roly Poly” demonstrates opposites: up/down, out/ in, fast/slow. Titles such as Dinosaur Vs. Bedtime mirrors children’s own evening routines such as bathing, or brushing teeth, something they can relate to easily. And “Go Away Big Green Monster” teaches empowerment and how to tackle fears. You can build your own monster with some paper, fabric, googly eyes and magnets.
