This is the tale of a married couple, both professors at a small college in Georgia. It seems to be a stable, relatively happy marriage. Then the wife, Sandrine, is found dead in their bed, an apparent suicide with an empty pill bottle and glass of vodka at her side. But the investigator suspects Sam (the husband) of murder after interviewing him and finding his answers not typical of a grieving husband.
So the case goes to trial, during which Sam can’t seem to focus, drifting back into memories of the marriage. We are kept wondering until the end if he did or didn’t have anything to do with Sandrine’s death. It’s an interesting character study of both husband and wife. With quite a surprising ending.
