This film written, starring, and produced by Zoe Kazan is described as a romantic comedy.  Don’t, however, expect a traditional love story or a laugh out loud comedic plot.  It also stars Paul Dano as Calvin a boy genius, nerdy writer who is experiencing writer’s block.  Suddenly, he has a revelation in a dream and begins to write about a fictional character named, of course, Ruby Sparks.  His work comes alive and so does Ruby Sparks.  This once make believe girlfriend becomes everything he wants in a relationship.  But eventually things changed, and it is then that Calvin realizes that he can control Ruby Sparks because she is his creation.

Annette Benning and Antonio Banderas play Calvin’s parents.  Their characters offer some of the best comedy in the film.  Calvin is well played by Dano, but he is not a character that I grew to like.

This is an interesting film built on the concept of the power of words.  I enjoyed it, but wouldn’t put it on my list of must see again.
