In an effort to freshen up our J cookbook section, we recently received five new (copyright 2014) specialized cook books.  Each is part of the “You’re the Chef” series published by Millbrook Press.

Written by Kari Cornell and photographed by Brie Cohen, each book is designed to be user-friendly and focuses on a particular type of food.  “Muffins, Breads, and Pancakes,” “Sweet Cookies and Bars,” “Snacks and Appetizers,” “Deserts,” and “Slurpable Smoothies and Drinks” are the titles we have purchased.

Each book is set up in the same way.  General cooking procedures, safety tips, cooking tools, techniques, and measuring introduces each set of recipes.  Children as young as 5, with adult help, through pre-teens would find the recipes easy to follow.  The illustrations help guide the cook through simple procedures like how to cut cauliflower or how to peel an egg.  Each book ends with additional readings and websites to visit.  In addition, there is a metric conversion chart for volume, length, mass, and temperature.

The illustrations and variety of recipes will, hopefully, make this an appealing series.
