If you’ve read Still Alice, a novel about a Harvard professor who discovers she has Alzheimer’s disease, then you are familiar with Lisa Genova. She is a neuroscientist with a PhD from Harvard and an excellent writer. Genova writes about neurological disorders, and her latest novel does not disappoint. Maddy is a young woman who desperately wants to become a stand-up comic, but her parents do not approve. She also suffers from bipolar disorder, which, like any mental illness, carries a stigma, especially given the manic behavior which is part of the disease. Maddy is hospitalized several times, and her mother keeps her on a tight rein until Emily, Maddy’s engaged older sister agrees to let her live with her in New York for awhile. Can she make it on the stage, her true passion, despite all the risks? Genova paints a true picture into what it is like to suffer from this disease.
