Jane and Lenny, husband and wife, are both artists. She is a writer. Lenny is a painter. Senna explores the theme of being biracial as Jane struggles to complete her second novel that has taken her 10 years to write. Along with their 2 young children, Jane’s family has moved to the west coast from Brooklyn when her friend offers them his house to live in when he is away in Australia. Senna describes the nuances of being black and mixed-race from an adult point-of-view along with her observations with her children experiencing the world. Relieved to be making progress on her novel, Jane falters when success is still not within reach. Senna’s perspective mirrors her own upbringing and introduces the question as to where a biracial person fits into the world. With humor and pathos, I wanted Jane to succeed despite not liking her very much.
