A winner at both the Toronto Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, “Ida” is set in 1960’s Communist Poland. Ida was raised in a Catholic convent, and before she can take her final vows, she must visit her only living relative, her mother’s sister.
This visit reveals to Ida details about her parents, their deaths, and her aunt’s life. Before she returns to the convent, Ida and her aunt embark on a journey that unearths secrets about her family’s past dating back to the Nazi occupation.
Filmed in black and white, the barren, wintry, impoverished landscape of Poland reflects Polish society at that time. Agata Kulesza and Agata Trzebuchowska portray the embittered aunt and the naive novice. Their powerful acting reveal the intensity of the experience that have embarked on.
