“Heft” is a novel about a 450-pound man living in Brooklyn. Although he was once a professor, he hasn’t worked or left his apartment in about 20 years. He recalls a female student he befriended when he was still teaching. The friendship cost him his job although they were just friends. This girl tells her side of the story, too. She only took one class at University, but then reaches out to ‘Heft’ and they start going out together. She abruptly ends their friendship and they continue to write letters until that, too, ends. Now Heft hears from her out of the blue. She tells him she has a son and requests his help as he is graduating from high school. The third part of the book is told from the point of view of the son. Entertaining and well-developed characters. Recommended.
