We received three new Halloween books from a recent order. Each is very different from the others and I think will attract readers.
“Splat the Cat What Was That” by Rob Scotton features Splat, Spike and Seymour on Halloween night as they go Trick or Treating. Colorful drawings and a lift-the-flap format make this a very appealing Halloween tale. Basically, Splat and Spike are looking for Seymour. They enter a spooky house and are frightened by ghostly sounds. Nothing too spooky for the younger set and everything turns out fine in the end.
“Skelton For Dinner” by Margery Cuyler is a Halloween tale built around misinformation. Big Witch and Little Witch are brewing a delicious stew, which they would like to share with their friends, Skelton, Ghost, and Ghoul. Big Witch posts a list of their intended guests on a tree. When Skelton sees the list he misinterprets it. He concludes that he, Ghost and Ghoul aren’t the guests rather they are the dinner. Young readers will get the idea and probably be eager to help Skelton, Ghost and Ghoul understand the true intentions of Big Witch and Little Witch.
My favorite of these three new titles if “Monster Needs a Costume” by Paul Czajak. Monster faces a very common problem: “What should I be for Halloween?” He goes through several ideas until he comes up with his final decision. The story is told in rhyme ,which adds to the story. I think every child will identify with the monster and really enjoy how he solves his problem
