Sailor Twain: Or: The Mermaid in the Hudson To Dance: A Ballerina's Graphic Novel Moving House yesterday at the Fall Into Books conference, Mark Siegel’s keynote address described the history of graphic novels in the United States. He classified the genre into 3 categories: ‘American’ (MAD Magazine, Archie, Superman, etc.), European (TinTin, Asterix,..), and Japanese manga. He explained how it developed over the past 80 years or so including the highlights of Maus and American Born Chinese. This section is very popular in my school library- especially the James Patterson series “Maximum Ride” and “Witch and Wizard” lately. I’ve replaced my reference section with graphic novels as I’ve weeded down the titles that are now available electronically.
