Like Lillian, I recently visited the 4th graders (3 schools) in my district to discuss the summer reading program at our school. I observed that they were enthusiastic about reading and excited about the titles I shared with them (“11 Birthdays,” “Danny, Champion of the World,” “One and Only Ivan,” “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,” “Long Walk to Water, ” “Ryan and Jimmy,” “The Dreamer,” “Turtle in Paradise.” The majority said they were in the middle of reading a book when I surveyed them. We encourage them to bring a picture in September of them posing doing their summer reading. All 3 visits were positive and I hope to maintain and extend their reading enthusiasm.
