SOCSD librarians visited Tappan Zee Elementary School today.  Most of the kids that I saw in the second and third grades had their own library cards which, I think, proves that our visits to the schools in September urging students to get their own library cards is showing results.  After urging students to join the SRP and attend summer programs, I asked them what they were reading.  They were very happy to share with me books they have read or are currently reading.

I think almost every child who responded mentioned a book that was part of a series.  The one exception was a third-grader who said she was reading a Judy Blume book.  Adding to our series collection, therefore, will probably benefit our circulation statistics and make our young readers even happier.

The other thing about our visit that made me happy was how receptive the students were to hear about new books.  I did three brief book talks on three new books that would be appropriate for these grade levels.  When I finished one boy told me that he was going to read all three.  He made my day.
