Pekkanen’s newest thriller revolves around a family coming undone. The Barclays are getting divorced and an attorney is hired to investigate the family and recommend how custody of the only child should be directed. The attorney, Stella, is recently divorced and in her own grieving period must plant herself in the Barclay household in order to make the best decision on behalf of the child, Rose. To complicate matters, the father was having an affair with the live-in nanny who died (or was she killed?) in the house. The mother is overprotective and the daughter has become mute after seeing the nanny fall from a window to her death. Stella has her work cut out for her and feels compassion for the child as her situation resembles her own complicated childhood in several ways. Entertaining.
