“You Should Have Known” by Jean Korelitz gets filed in my “Gone Girl” read-alike category. Grace Sachs is living the good life in NYC. Married to a pediatric oncologist, mother of a 12 year-old boy, she is a psychologist who has just written her first book, “You Should Have Known” which cautions those who ignore their first instincts that a potential partner is bad news. She is already being courted by the publisher and set to appear on Good Morning America to promote her book when her world changes. At first the murder of a mother of a student at her son’s Upper East Side school seems distant and unrelated to her life. But as she attempts to contact her husband who “is away on a medical conference,” she begins to realize she is right in the middle of the crime. Her stable, routine world starts to fall apart and all she held as the truth turns out not to be.
