Public libraries in the Brevard County system in Florida and the public library in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, have pulled E L James’ trilogy from their shelves. Don Walker, a spokesman for the Brevard County government said he hadn’t read any of the books, but he did read reviews. (You would think he would have read them for the purpose of “research.”) On this basis, it appears the books are no longer available to the public because they were deemed pornographic. The Wisconsin library didn’t order the books citing its “no erotica” policy.
Deborah Caldwell Stone,deputy director of the ALA’s intellectual freedom office state that “When a book is removed from the shelf, folks who can’t afford a Nook or Kindle no longer have access to it.” Will this spur the sales of Nooks and Kindles?? Is this another example of the widening divide between the classes??
