Tilt tells the tales of the three teens introduced in Triangles, Ellen Hopkins’ first adult verse novel. Mikayla believes that the love she and Dylan share will survive any test, but an unplanned pregnancy shows her that sometimes love isn’t enough. Shane is struggling to deal with first love, an HIV-positive boyfriend, and a terminally ill sister. Harley struggles to find her true identity while navigating the waters of adolescence, sex, and the expectations of boys. The end of the novel comes too soon and appears to leave storylines open-ended. The book is written in Hopkins’ lyrical verse style and is compelling, but if the reader hasn’t read Triangles it feels like you’re missing some important puzzle pieces. Nevertheless, the story is solid enough and will delight Hopkins’ fans.
