Published recently, “This Star Won’t Go Out” is the work of Esther Earl who died of thyroid cancer at the age of 16. Compiled mostly by her parents, the book is a compilation of Esther’s diary, e-mail, blogs and videos.
Esther’s story was John Green’s inspiration for his best-selling novel “The Fault in Our Stars.” Esther’s books recalls how in 2009, hooked up to an oxygen tank, she met Green for the first time at a Harry Potter convention in Boston. Green has said that he would never have written “The Fault in Our Stars” if he not gotten to know Esther Earl. Although she inspired Green, the fictional character Hazel in his book is not Esther nor his Hazel’s story Esther’s story. Only Esther could have told what it was like to be diagnosed with cancer at age 12. That is why Green is so happy that Esther is becoming an author. Esther’s dad says his daughter wanted to be an author as early as third grade, and now she is.”
