Sally Hepworth’s 2nd novel revolves around the lives of three female characters. The first is Eve, a single mom whose husband was caught running a ponzi scheme, resulting in her becoming persona non grata in her neighborhood as well as forcing her to find employment to now support herself and her daughter, Clementine. Clementine is 7 years old, and is the center of Eve’s life. In order for Clem to remain in her school, Eve begins a job as cook at Rosalind House, an assisted-living facility in the area. Anna, a 38 year old resident who has just begun living at the House, is the third character, who sadly has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. The novel shifts perspective between the three characters, as Anna’s illness progresses and Eve tries to help Anna maintain her quality of life. It’s a tear-jerker, but the novel offers insight into relationships, death and both loss of control over and having to re-invent one’s life.
