Berta and Elmer Hader, who resided on River Road in Upper Grandview for many years, wrote and illustrated many wonderful children’s books. We have added a new title to our collection from their body of work “The Little Stone House.”
Illustrated with mostly black and white drawings, “The Little Stone House” tells the story of a city family who have run out of room in their small apartment. The mom and dad and their two children decide they want to move to the country. The story details their search for the perfect house. When they cannot find it, they decide to build it themselves. And so they do. The detailed drawings go through the process of building their home, with the help of local artisans and family friends. The book ends with a Thanksgiving feast enjoyed by all.
Joy Rich has written the true story of the Haders: “Berta and Elmer Hader: A Lifetime of Art.” In her well-researched book, she explains how the Haders build the real stone house. They used their real-life experiences in house building in their book “The Little Stone House.”
