I found this latest novel by Tracy Chevalier to be a good read. It chronicles the journey of Honor Bright, a Quaker who leaves England with her sister Grace, who is bethrothed to an English man who had already emigrated to Ohio. Besides her parents and close friend, Honor also leaves behind the man who jilted her, hoping to make a fresh start in 1850 America. However, she finds suffers great trials in her journey. The Atlantic ship voyage left her sick for the entire 30 day crossing, her sister Grace barely made it to Ohio when she succumbs to yellow fever, and Honor is left to her own devices to continue her life in a new land. Honor is an admirable character, who learns to how to deal with a non too friendly mother-in-law and sister-in-law, how to adjust to married life, life on a farm far from town and also the issue of slavery. It definitely makes the reader grateful for all the opportunities and equalities of the 21st century.
