This is a wonderful children’s book about a young boy in England who likes to dress up in women’s clothing. Dennis makes a female friend at school, Lisa, who designs fashionable dresses for herself, and who encourages Dennis to be himself and dress up in her creations. She even convinces him to let her put makeup on him and try to fool people that he’s a lady named Denise. The two have a ball fooling everyone until a day at school goes sideways, and Dennis is outed, and of course, humiliated. And the headmaster expells Dennis, which is way over the top. But his schoolmates rally round him, and Dennis triumphs in the end. It’s a very sweet story that cautions against judging others without knowing them. AND it’s illustrated by Quentin Blake, which is always a highlight. Especially recommended for readers who like Roald Dahl.
