is a typical A. Tyler novel with a male main character in his mid 30’s who loses his wife in an odd, atypical accident. Tyler examines the widow’s reflections on his marriage to his wife, alternating between remembering it as a good marriage and a not-so-good marriage. He works with his sister in a family business and the lives of their office mates add color as in an Anita Brookner novel (are we going to hear from her again, by the way?) that examines a solitary life and the acquaintances they interact with. Although the dead wife appears and visits from time to time, the story does not turn into a back from the dead plot, but instead adds insight as to the days of the marriage and the possibilities of what the future holds for the protaganist left behind.
