Recently I attended a workshop on Teen literature given by a teen librarian from NYPL. She began with current trends, including the very popular Sci-Fi/ Fantasy, which comprises about 75% of books being published for teens. Other popular genres include Paranormal/ Supernatural, Spy novels and what is referred to as “genre mashups”, or other combinations of genres found in the same title. These can include Sci-Fi/ Romance, Historical Fic/Romance, Suspense/Action/Mystery, etc.

Several popular titles she mentioned in Sci-Fi/Fantasy are The Summer Prince, Parallel, 5th Wave and Proxy. For Paranormal/ Supernatural/Horror her list includes The Fury by Alex Gordon Smith, The Beautiful and the Cursed, and The Coldest Girl in Coldtown. Panic, Fangirl, Winger and Boy 21 are popular in Realistic Fiction, and This is What Happy Looks Like, Just One Day (and its sequel,  Just One Year is out) and The Infinite Moment of Us are some current titles in the Suspense/Action/Mystery genre. In Historical Fiction, the list includes VIII, Stormbringers: Order of Darkness series, Maid of Secrets and Code Name Verity and its sequel, Rose Under Fire.
