The next time someone asks if libraries are still relevant, ask them where else you can check out a ghost-hunting kit? In an article from the September 2024 issue of American Libraries, the Clark County (Ohio) Public Library (CCPL) debuted three kits in January of 2023. Each kit contains a backpack with several ghost-hunting items: a “spirit box” which scans radio frequencies to hear ghosts’ voices, an electromagnetic field (EMF) meter, and and a recorder for capturing electronic voice phenomena (EVP). Sonya Knisley, the Head of Children’s Services, came up with the idea after seeing the kits featured at an Ohio Library Expo. The kits circulate for a week only, and have been borrowed over 90 times in a year & a half. Knisley notes, “we’ve never not had holds on them”. The library added two more kits to keep up with the demand. Other libraries have added them as well. That’s one “for the books!”
