The bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 was the beginning of World War II for Americans. Lana Hitchcock is flying to Hilo on December 5 of that year to reconcile with her ailing father, deadly ill with meningitis. Unfortunately she is too late, and when the bombing takes place two days later, she flees with the neighbor’s children to the mountains. Their German parents were taken by the FBI and sent to a camp set up to house Japanese, Germans, and Italians, then believed to be enemies. Sara Ackermann is an entertaining writer; although the novel dragged somewhat at times, the historical details and ending made it well worth reading. 3.5 stars
