Last Saturday my husband and I ventured to Central Park West and 77th St. to see the current exhibit at the New York Historical Society. The show celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 1913-1914 Armory Show. One of the chief organizers of this ground-breaking art show was Arthur Davies, grandfather of Niels Davies of Rockland County. This avant garde show combined European and American art, including examples of the Ash Can School, works by Cezanne, Hopper, Gauguin, and many others. “Nude Descending a Staircase” by Marcel Duchamp shocked the public and critics alike.
I can’t remember visiting this museum before, but it was well worth it. The current Armory show will end next weekend, but very soon an exhibit featuring the work of Bill Cunningham of the NYT will be opening. In addition to art exhibits the Museum has several permanent collections that both adults and children would enjoy. Case after case of toys, glass bottles, Tiffany lamps, furniture, etc. can keep the visitior amused for quite a long time.
The Museum is located very close to the Natural History Museum. It would be easy to combine visitis to both in one day or afternoon.
