In 1950’s Tehran, Ellie and Homa are best friends, from the day they meet on the first day of school, up until college. Ellie attends a party given by a friend married to “the Colonel” and naively tells him that her friend Homa organized a recent protest march. After that night, the lives of Ellie and Homa took a radical turn, and their close bond was broken. That is, until Homa reaches out to Ellie years later, with an urgent plea for help. The novel gives a glimpse into patriarchal Iran after the Shah was deposed and Khomeni took over the reins of the country, and reveals the fierce determination of Iranian women to win back their rights.
