Director Christopher Nolan’s (Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception) latest foray into science fiction, in which the circumstances of a post-apocalyptic future send former military pilot Joseph Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey) into space to save humankind from extinction. While I’ll admit that the concept and conclusion left me more than a little confused, I found it much more enjoyable than the critically lauded, equally stunning, but less scientifically accurate Gravity.
The film boasts an impressive cast (including Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine), but for me the standout character of the film was the robot TARS (voiced by Bill Irwin). Clocking in at just under three hours, the film requires a significant investment of time, but as a testament to the film’s entertainment value, I only checked the time once while watching. I’m looking forward to seeing Matt Damon, who here plays an astronaut of questionable integrity, once again tackle the loneliness of solo space exploration in the lead role in the upcoming film adaptation of Andy Weir’s The Martian.
