I just finished reading “Train Dreams” by Denis Johnson and I think it’s a winner. It was one of the books shortlisted but not chosen by the Pulitzer Prize committee. It is a novella about Robert Grainer, a day laborer living in the west whose life spans most of the 20th century. Robert is a loner and he reminds you of characters in a Jack London novel. Even though the book is short, you are left with a strong feeling of who this character is and a taste of what a life may have been like in that time and that part of our country.
