This non-fiction title is a feel – good read about a swimmer off the coast of California, who encounters a baby whale early one morning during her daily workout. Lynne Cox relates the amazing experience she had 30 years ago when she was just 17, when a baby grey whale winds up swimming alone very close to her. The author is horrified to find the baby whale is without its mother, on whom it depends on for food and protection. She tries to communicate with the whale that she has nicknamed Grayson (for the grey whale’s son) by using her heartfelt feelings of love towards it. This method of communication may sound strange, but once you’ve read about the author’s attempts to reunite the baby grey whale with its mother, you will be pleasantly surprised. I found it to be an amazing and uplifting read. I have it in the teen section at BLV, I think teens might enjoy it as well.
