A very moving story, Girl at War is a fictional account of what it was like to live in Croatia during the war of independence. The main protagonist, Ana Juric, is 10 and living in Zagreb, the capital, when war breaks out between the Croats and the JNA, the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People’s Army. With her young sister becoming ill, Ana’s parents must risk traveling on dangerous roads to transport Rahela to the Sarajevo airport in order to fly the sick child to the U.S. for her best chance of survival. It is on the journey home that Ana’s entire world is forever changed. The horrors of war are evident to the reader, as Ana flashes back and forth between childhood in Croatia and adulthood in NY, and as she struggles to make sense of her world and the violence she has experienced in her losses. The author writes from experience, having lived in Zagreb during the war in the 1990’s.
