Boy, Snow, Bird is a re-imagining of the tale of Snow White. “Boy” is the evil step-mom, “Snow” is Snow White and “Bird” is the daughter of Boy and half-sister of Snow. The story takes place in the 1950s and 1960s, first in Manhattan where Boy lives with her abusive father who is a rat-catcher. Boy runs away, buying a bus ticket to the last town on the line, Flax Hill, MA. There she meets and eventually marries Snow’s father. The father’s dark past reveals itself which leads to Snow being sent away.
The story is told in three parts by each character. The characters are well developed and the story moves along at a good pace. You have some sympathy for Boy, the evil step-mom, but it is meant to be unclear if Snow is the real villain. You’ll have to decide.
