Avalon High by MegCabot moves Arthurian legend into modern day suburbia in this latest take on King Arthur’s Court. Ellie Harrison recently relocated to Annapolis, Maryland with her parents during their year-long sabbatical. While running one day, Ellie notices Will with his friends and feels instantly connected to him. After they officially meet at school, he shows up at her house and their friendship grows. As they grow closer, odd things begin happening that seem to signify that Will is actually King Arthur reincarnate. According to their teacher, Mr. Morton, a member of the Order of the Bear (a secret society that believes Arthur is destined to reappear and save the world from Evil), Will’s girlfriend Jennifer is Guinevere, his best friend, Lance, is Lancelot, and his stepbrother, Marco, is Mordred. Who does that make Ellie and what is her part in this tale? The story is an interesting take on the Arthurian Legend, but Ellie’s rampant self-esteem issues, which magically get better when Will reveals his feelings for her, make the story feel pathetic and predictable.
