The Oscar nominations were announced yesterday morning and among the nominees across categories book adaptations abound.  Best Picture nominees include:

The Revenant (directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, all of whom are nominated) is based on The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge by Michael Punke.

The Martian (starring Matt Damon, Best Actor nominee) is based on 2014’s best-selling The Martian by Andy Weir.

The Big Short (for which Director Adam McKay and Supporting Actor Christian Bale are also nominated) is based on Michael Lewis’ non-fiction book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.

Carol (starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, also both nominated) is based on The Price of Salt, a 1952 romance novel by local author Patricia Highsmith.

Brooklyn (starring Best Actress nominee Saoirse Ronan) is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Colm Toibon.

And finally Room (directed by nominee Lenny Abrahamson and starring nominee Brie Larson) is based on Room: A Novel by Emma Donoghue.

45 Years (based on the short story In Another Country by David Constantine), Steve Jobs (based on Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson), The Danish Girl (based on The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff), Trumbo (based on Trumbo by Bruce Cook), and lastly Spotlight, based on Boston Globe articles published in 2003’s Betrayal: The Crisis in the Catholic Church by the Investigative Staff at the Boston Globe.
