In this short (96 pages) novel, zoologist Nicola Davies tells the story of Pedru who is attacked in his African village one night and loses his arm. Not shying away from the boy’s anger and need for revenge (he wants to hunt the lion down and kill him), Pedru is introduced to animal researchers who explain how they study lions with the goal of protecting them. The book has a conservationist angle and instructs on the loss of land to the lion. Later in the novel, we see Pedru as an young man pursuing a career in studying animals and teaching native villagers how to protect themselves against lion attacks without killing them. Recommended.
