Today, the librarians from the South Orangetown visited Tappan Zee Elmentary School. It was a great visit because we were able to talk to the second and third graders about several important matters.
I emphasized with the classes I met how important it is to have their own library cards and how easy it is to get a card. Also I spent time talking about all the summer reading programs available to them and their siblings.
I came away with the definite impression that kids are reading and that there teachers are constantly encouraging them to read. All the teachers, when I was there, impressed upon their students how important it was to read during the summer to keep their reading skills sharp.
When I discussed with these children what they had read recently, many mentioned different series that they were reading or had read. We have tried to add to our juvenile collection new series or series that some kids have requested. Perhaps that is where we should direct more of our resources, since that is what kids in these grades are reading. Since many of these series are in paperback, I think that we should do a good weeding of our current paperback collection in order to make room for new additions. Maybe, a separate area should be designated for ongoing series that would make them easily accessible.
