This is a documentary about the film “The Shining.” Fans talk about their theories of what they think Stanley Kubrick was trying to express in the movie. They come up with ideas that the movie represents the Holocaust, the genocide of American Indians, and the Apollo 11 moon landing. The director did massive research on the area where the filming took place (it was the sight of an Indian burial ground), and he was also very interested in subliminal messages being used in commercials at the time. I was quite amazed at some of the things pointed out as being symbolic of something else.
The second disk is a panel discussion from the first Kubrick film festival, deleted scenes (not shown but talked about), information about the music (strange) and poster design (interesting). It ends with three alternative trailers to Room 237, all with gushing blood.
I’ll have to see the movie again to refresh my memory and see how the documentary enhances the movie. Or not.
