On a recent visit to Barnes & Noble, I came upon a display of this relatively new book by Jill Biden, wife of the vice president. Lynne Cheney, the wife of the former VP, has also written and published several children’s books. “When Washington Crossed the Delaware, which we have, is a very good telling of the historic events leading to the Battle of Trenton.
Jill Biden’s book is much more personal. Told through the eyes of her 5 year old granddaughter, it is a story of a child whose father is on active duty in Iraq. The vice president’s son served in Delaware National Guard and was stationed in Iraq.
A recent story in the JN reported on the deployment of area National Guard soldiers to serve in Afghanistan for one year. The pictures of the children playing with their moms and dads before they had to leave was extremely moving. Regardless of any political opinions, the men and women who serve and their families do sacrifice a great deal. Mrs. Biden’s book fills a need for not only the families of military personnel, but for the public at large.
