Allan Karlsson jumps out the window of his nursing home an hour before he is to celebrate his 1ooth birthday. He makes it to a bus station, manages to hijack a fellow traveler’s suitcase and finds it to be stuffed with cash, lots of cash. He meets up with several friendly fellows and there the adventure begins.
As a boy he was interested in munitions and he finds himself involved in many of the explosions of the twentieth century. We are treated to this back story and learn he has not only witnessed many important events but participated in them as well, meeting and dining and plotting with figures like Truman, Stalin. Churchill, de Gaulle, Franco and Mao.
